WhatsApp is adding a transcription feature aimed at allowing users to communicate more easily through voice messages. It is launching globally for both Android and iOS users within a few weeks. The feature automatically generates a text version of voice clips so recipients can read messages when they cannot listen to them.

Voice messages are a convenient way to record a quick message rather than typing out a long response; however, sometimes listening to voice can be painful in noisy environs or when you cannot use sound, for example, in public or during a meeting. This new feature has been able to handle this by allowing transcription of the voice message for users to read it at their convenience.

In its attempt to protect the private nature of these voice messages, the transcriptions will be created on the actual device to which they are sent, meaning no one-not even WhatsApp-will ever be able to get access to your voice message content. The feature will be off, first, but users will be able to turn it on through the settings at “Chats” in WhatsApp and then toggle the “Voice message transcripts” option.

To start, the transcription feature will support several languages for Android, including English, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, and Hindi. For iOS users, however, more languages are available for use, as found on WhatsApp’s support page. Additional languages are also slated to be added by the company in the coming months, thus making the service accessible to a more global audience.

Although voice messages still prove to be an easy method for quick updates or more elaborated thoughts, this transcription tool will also keep users able to interact with voice messages in their own environment, without having to play them out loud. The development of this feature further extends the versatility of WhatsApp, making it easier for users to stay connected and communicate effectively regardless of the circumstances.
