RoboCup Asia-Pacific 2024:Humanoid robots play football in Qingdao
In this electrifying demonstration of rapidly advancing robotics, humanoid robots took center stage at Robocup 2024. This event was held from October 24 to 27 in Qingdao, Shandong province, where spectators witnessed an unbelievable sight: soccer matches played by robots. While somewhat clunky, their accuracy with regards to hitting marks impressed everyone in the room and served as a showcase of what robotics and AI have learned over the last few years.
More than 20 countries and regions were represented in this year’s RoboCup Asia-Pacific, with around 600 participants from more than 200 teams. All the competition winners cut across the ages, from students in elementary and middle school to university level cuts; that included Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Singapore Polytechnic, the University of New South Wales in Sydney, and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology; education, innovation, internationalization in collaboration brought together early engineering scientists, and young AI enthusiasts competing and taking forward the new innovations to their full extent.
Very very different and special it appeared and still does, in all fairness. For the very first time, RoboCup Asia-Pacific found new and prestigious home-actual, world-class venue-Cina Movie Metropolis along the new Qingdao West Coast. The humungous film studio shall end up being the biggest and largest of its sort at least in Asia-to get that perfect setting when doing to science fantasy and magic the setting for a future arena can set against for yet another captivating backdrop uniting the world of top-most advanced robotics with that of topmost cinematography. This enabled the venue to be highly immersive, where the technical and visual aspects of robotics would be presented in such a way that it not only captivated the eyes and minds of tech experts but also those of the general public.

Event organizers noted that the venue was selected due to its ability to be able to provide customized settings that support robot testing. The China Movie Metropolis offers a range of settings; from household interiors to football fields and even industrial settings. These controlled environments can be used to test a robot because they are safer and more versatile for the several types of competitions featured in RoboCup.
“The idea was to make an entertaining and aesthetically pleasing presentation that would demonstrate the latest state-of-the-art robotics and AI,” said Changjiu Zhou, president of the RCAP Confederation. “But besides this, we also wanted to take advantage of the special media capacity of the film industry to help promote the teams and the robots and to provide them with a global platform.”
One of the good times of this year’s gathering is the integration of the robots and AI into some media promotions as the involved teams and robots can expose to international exposure. RoboCup organizers came together with the film industry and media and hoped the gap between the technological and mainstream entertainment world would make people interested in robotics advancement and AI.

Aside from the robotics competition, the event was also the 2024 Global Ocean Development Forum. It was an assembly of world leaders and experts talking about the different sustainable marine initiatives and seeing how robotics and AI might be applied in ocean challenges. Zhou even participated in some of the discussions that were held in the forum; this makes it seem possible that the future of robotics is not so far after all, at least regarding the marine environment. For instance, an underwater autonomous vehicle can be employed in exploring the deep sea while unmanned vessels may find applications in ocean conservation and resource management.
Zhou discussed an exciting new development which would be unveiled for the future of RoboCup. Already, a plan has been set forth to hold an international competition for marine robotics in Qingdao next year. A competition which utilizes robotics and AI for marine applications may spur teams to develop capable robots for navigation and functioning underwater. Such competitions will speed up innovation in those areas.
The initiative of RoboCup is international and was established in 1997. It advocates for the creation of intelligent robots that can execute most tasks independently. Its signature competition is a soccer match played by the robots. However, other events held include rescue operations by the robots and industrial challenges presented to them. The competitions initiated by RoboCup unite academic institutions, research organizations, and industries in robotics to collaborate with each other.
It has acted as an important base in hosting such events for the Qingdao West Coast New Area, rapidly turning into a new robotics and AI hub. The area recently initiated a provincial-level robotics industrial park that would incubate innovation and hasten the development of AI and industrial internet technologies. This is the robotics industry hub in China, attracting talent and investment, and puts the region at the front in the global robotics ecosystem.
Through initiatives such as RoboCup, we are strengthening Qingdao’s position as a key player in the global robotics market, said Qi Zhenpeng, deputy director of the Qingdao West Coast New Area’s science and technology innovation development center. “Our mission is to turn Qingdao into a global hub of robotics. Top robotics teams and AI specialists will be attracted there to engage in international collaborations aimed at helping the industry forward, He said.
Efforts by the Qingdao West Coast New Area to become the home of robotics fit into a bigger plan for China to dominate the world in terms of AI and automation technologies. Now with a strong network of industrial parks, research centers, and academic institutions focused on robotics, the region is capable of attracting global talent and driving further innovation in the field.
The success of RoboCup Asia-Pacific 2024 would symbolize how crucial pieces robotics and artificial intelligence have become in the current technological direction. Simultaneously, the event underlines collaboration, education, and innovation as major determinants of what such a revolutionizing industry consists of. Robotics is still coming of age, and platforms like RoboCup are most relevant in showing improvements, encouraging young engineers, and opening the doors to new possibilities that could shape the world.
In the coming years, we will see more events of the type of RoboCup, and new competitions will be created in a focus area such as marine robotics, autonomous vehicles, and AI-driven manufacturing. These competitions will not only advance robotics but also serve to promote the practical application of this technology in solving some of the world’s biggest challenges.
The robots themselves can take a long way before they reach fluidity and finesse with human athletes, but their growing capabilities are a dead giveaway that the future of robotics is at the door. From soccer matches to deep-sea explorations, it is limitless, and RoboCup will be at the forefront of this exciting journey.
