A new AI-driven software tool, codenamed “Operator,” from OpenAI is reportedly being prepared for launch as soon as January 2024. Bloomberg reported that the tool will be able to run natively on the user’s computer, though its first release will probably be a research preview through OpenAI’s developer API. This development, therefore is a giant leap for Open AI that pitches itself against competitors such as Anthropic, which recently launched its own AI agent known as Computer Use and rumored Google AI assistant device to be launched for consumers.
Little is known about the full capacities of Operator, but the tool should work as a general-purpose assistant capable of executing work within web browsers. Such a tool will make it easy for users to automate a wide range of activities-from web browsing and retrieval of information to applications and workflows management. If successful, Operator would expand the scope of AI assistants far beyond basic conversational interfaces, offering more manipulative task-oriented capabilities.
This is on the heels of a policy paper from OpenAI detailing several strategic recommendations of the U.S. government in the artificial intelligence domain. This includes, among other things, the suggestion to create an “economic zone” particularly for the development of AI wherein infrastructure could be put in place to spur innovation. In addition, the report advocates for the forming of stronger alliances with foreign partners that would match the advanced machines developed by China in the global AI race. This is part of OpenAI’s larger strategy for AI governance, which would ensure that not only technology advances, but also the international cooperation that fosters it.
As competition to control AI intensifies, OpenAI’s “Operator” may shape how AI becomes the new norm and an everyday element of digital life. But whether this will clearly stand out from peers in the competition is certain. Already changing fast, with such juggernauts as Anthropic and Google competing aggressively for the top spot in AI, this landscape is getting crowded. In releasing Operator through its developer API, OpenAI is positioning it not only as a consumer product but also as a resource for developers to integrate AI within their applications and workflows.
The year 2024 dawns on an AI landscape primed for a series of groundbreaking breakthroughs; one of the first major releases could well be OpenAI’s Operator.
