Microsoft Rolls Out AI-Powered Features in Paint and Notepad

Here, the company has initiated seeding AI feature updates for Windows 11. And now, the firm is adding the latest enhancements to Paint and Notepad for testers in the Canary and Dev Channels. New capabilities fall in the larger AI roadmap Microsoft unveiled last October, which will add AI-powered tools for Paint, Notepad, and Windows Search; this highly anticipated Microsoft Recall will land in December.

 Microsoft Paint New Features

Microsoft Paint will get Generative Fill and Generative Erase. The two new tools use AI to enhance the capabilities of image editing. For instance, Generative Erase, which was previously available in the Photos app, takes a selected area within an image and removes unwanted parts of that area it contains. The AI fills in the erased section carefully so that it blends with the background around it. This feature is perfect for the small touch-ups, such as dust, or any imperfections on photos.

Generative Fill This is the more innovative of the two tools. With this tool, a user can select a part of an image, and new AI-generated content fills the area, blending the selection into the scene. It works by taking that section and filling it with AI-generated artwork to match the style and context of the existing image, so it looks like a natural part of the composition. While Paint includes a separate tool called **Creator**, that generates standalone 1024×1024 images, this **Generative Fill** actually completes the process by making sure that whatever content is generated integrates well with the rest of the image. This new AI tool will aim to make editing a much easier, intuitive experience for casual users, making it especially valuable for those who might want some form of unique visual without bothering themselves with a long list of complicated software such as Photoshop.

In addition, the company has optimized the **Cocreator** creative AI tool for speed by running on a device’s NPU whenever that feature is supported. However, while **Generative Fill** will initially be available only with Snapdragon-based Copilot+ PCs, any Windows Insider build-capable PC can try Generative Erase.

AI-Powered Features for Notepad

On the productivity front, Microsoft also brings an AI-powered rewrite feature for **Notepad**. The tool should assist users with rewritten variants of the highlighted text – change tone or shorten/lengthen – rather than producing brand new content. That way, you can turn a formal message into casual wording or describe a whole paragraph in just a few words to get a gist of it. It is not meant to write out a chunk of text, but this feature is really useful for getting some quick modifications done on existing content.

It aims at automating and making routine stuff – whether editing photographs in Paint or writing notes in Notepad. That is what makes Microsoft’s integration into such applications a reflection of its focus on making those productivity tools smarter and more accessible. In that sense, it also demonstrates AI can be an amplifier for creativity and efficiency without needing advanced technical skills.
