Instagram introduces new features that improve the way a user interacts with his friends and family on the platform. On Monday, the social media giant announced that it was introducing the sharing of live location through Direct Messages (DMs), marking a move to compete other location-sharing services such as Apple’s Find My and Snapchat’s Snap Map. It is widely used to track live location for keeping an eye on friends’ and family members’ surroundings.
Instagram is also looking to introduce a similar feature into its messaging system.
The new location-sharing feature in Instagram was first silently tested earlier in the year. Meta already enables sharing a location through its messaging app WhatsApp, but this new functionality is different from that. Unlike the case of Snapchat and Apple, Instagram’s location-sharing feature is time-limited. The user can share their live location to others for as long as an hour, made possible in assisting users who need coordination of meeting or finding friends in crowded concert halls or events.
The Instagram live location can be sent to one person or even in a group chat. Once shared, only the people in a particular chat can view a user’s location. However, it’s worth mentioning that users are not allowed to forward location data to other chats. Lastly, the app will present an obviously accessible indicator at the top of the chat, reminding the users that their location is shared, and the shared location will naturally expire after one hour. Though it is limited to one hour now, there is always a chance that the social app could extend this time in the near future. After all, WhatsApp has already allowed its users to share their location for up to eight hours.
The feature is first going to be rolled out in a few countries and Instagram hasn’t specified which ones. The publication approached the company for more information.
In addition to live location sharing, Instagram has also introduced a new customization option for DMs. Users can now create personalized nicknames for themselves and others in their conversations. This new nickname feature offers a fun way to create inside jokes, shorten long usernames, or simply make DMs feel more personal. For a nickname, users can tap on the name of the chat at the top of any conversation and open “Nicknames,” then select the person whose name they want to change. These nicknames are only visible within the individual’s DM chats, so they do not affect anyone else’s view of a person’s account name.
This update also brings 17 new sticker packs to the platform, with over 300 new stickers that users can share in their DMs. These new stickers will allow the users a variety of fun ways to enhance conversations and engage with others on the platform.
With these updates, Instagram is continuing in its mission to make improvements to its messaging capabilities, offering users new ways to interact and personalize their experience. A combination of live location sharing, customizable nicknames, and a further increased sticker collection will most likely make Instagram DMs more engaging and interactive. While these updates are responses to other competing platforms, they are also reflective of Instagram’s strides to better the social features of the application and enable users to develop creative ways of communication.
